Medical silicone products have been used in human body for more than 40 years and have been widely used in various fields of medicine, such as artificial heart valves, intraocular lenses, intravenous catheters, pacemakers, artificial breast prostheses, cartilage stent substitutes, etc. The material has good biocompatibility. Clark et al. studied the oxygen balance of mammals after inhaling organic liquids at atmospheric pressure. It was found that the oxygen solubility of silicone oil was more than 10 times higher than that of plasma and saline. Even if the mice were completely immersed in silicone oil, sufficient oxygen could be obtained for 6 hours.

The medical silicone products are customized in the treatment of retinal detachment with silicone oil. It is clinically observed that the retinal anterior membrane often proliferates after injection of silicone oil. Animal experiments show that silicone oil has certain biological activity. In an animal model of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), Gonvers et al. injected silicone oil before contraction of the fibrous membrane, which reduced the incidence of retinal detachment by 50%, indicating that silicone oil can effectively reduce the shrinkage of the fibrous membrane.
